In Raft, a monotonically increasing integer that acts as a logical clock and election epoch. Each new election starts a new term. Terms allow servers to detect stale leaders: any server that receives a message with a higher term updates its own term and reverts to follower; messages from a lower term are rejected. At most one leader can exist per term.
