RU: split brain

A failure mode in a distributed cluster where a network partition causes two or more subsets of nodes to each believe they are the only surviving majority and independently accept writes. The result is divergent state that is difficult to reconcile. Quorum-based systems prevent it by requiring a true majority before accepting any write.
