In observability and alerting, signal-to-noise ratio describes the proportion of actionable, meaningful events relative to irrelevant or redundant ones in a stream of metrics, logs, or alerts. A low ratio causes alert fatigue — engineers stop responding to pages because most fire on transient or unimportant conditions. Improving it requires suppressing redundant alerts, correlating related events, and setting thresholds that reflect genuine anomalies rather than normal variance.
