The minimum number of nodes in a distributed system that must acknowledge an operation for it to be considered complete. For a cluster of n nodes the majority quorum is ⌊n/2⌋ + 1, which ensures any two quorums overlap by at least one node, preventing conflicting decisions. Consensus algorithms such as Raft and Paxos rely on majority quorums for both elections and log commits.
