Maximum Segment Size: a TCP option exchanged in SYN segments that advertises the largest payload, in bytes, a host can receive in one TCP segment, excluding IP and TCP headers. Each endpoint independently sets its MSS, and the sender must not exceed the remote MSS. MSS is typically derived from the local MTU minus 40 bytes for fixed IP and TCP headers.
