The process of encoding information onto a carrier signal by varying one or more of its properties — amplitude, frequency, or phase. Digital modulation schemes such as QAM vary amplitude and phase together to pack multiple bits into each transmitted symbol, trading higher throughput for greater sensitivity to noise.
