A hardware component that computes one boolean operation. Built from transistors, it takes one or more bit inputs and produces one bit output according to its truth table. AND, OR, and NOT gates are the three fundamental types. Gates compose into circuits that compute any boolean function, making them the physical basis of all digital computation.
