An auxiliary data structure — most commonly a B-tree — maintained alongside a table to speed up row lookups, range scans, and sort operations by avoiding a full sequential scan. Indexes trade extra storage and slower writes for faster reads; the wrong indexes or too many of them slow INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE more than they help SELECT.
