A deterministic function that maps an arbitrary key to a fixed-range integer (the hash code), used to assign keys to buckets in a hash table. A good hash function is fast to compute and distributes keys uniformly to minimise collisions; cryptographic hash functions additionally make reversal computationally infeasible.
