A network security device that inspects packets and enforces a policy of allow or deny. Stateless firewalls match each packet against static rules (IP, port, protocol) independently. Stateful firewalls track connection state tables, permitting only packets that belong to an established session. Next-generation firewalls add deep packet inspection and application-layer filtering.
