A client request to resolve a hostname to an IP address. The OS / local client resolver forwards the query to a recursive resolver, which either answers from cache or iterates through root → TLD → authoritative nameservers to find the answer. The TTL on each record controls how long the result may be cached before a fresh query is needed.
