The contract a messaging system makes about how many times a consumer receives each message. The three standard levels are at-most-once (possible loss, no duplicates), at-least-once (no loss, possible duplicates), and exactly-once (no loss, no duplicates). The chosen level determines the trade-off between simplicity, performance, and correctness requirements in the consuming application.
