In browser rendering, a composite layer is a portion of a page that the browser promotes to its own GPU-backed surface and composites with other layers on the GPU thread, bypassing layout and paint. Properties that trigger compositing — transform and opacity — allow animations to run on the compositor thread without touching the main thread.
