The reduction in the required signal-to-noise ratio (in dB) that an error-correcting or data-compression scheme achieves versus the uncoded baseline at the same bit error rate, or, in transform coding, the efficiency with which a transform concentrates signal energy into fewer coefficients. Higher coding gain means fewer bits are needed to represent the same quality.
