American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A 7-bit character encoding that maps integers 0–127 to English letters, digits, punctuation, and control codes. Uppercase 'A' is 65, lowercase 'a' is 97, digit '0' is 48. Uppercase and lowercase letters differ by exactly 32, allowing case conversion by flipping a single bit. ASCII is stored in 8-bit bytes with the high bit always zero.
