Address Resolution Protocol: maps a known IPv4 address to a MAC address within a local network segment. A host broadcasts an ARP request ('who has 192.168.1.1?'); the owner replies with its MAC. The result is cached in the ARP table; stale or forged entries (ARP poisoning) redirect traffic silently.
